Music Ministry at Good Shepherd

Rejoice, give thanks, and sing!

At all our liturgies here at Good Shepherd, we come before God’s presence with song. Music helps open us to that presence; it involves our whole selves in worship.

Our music is a rich and diverse expression of our common faith as Christians, and our Anglican heritage in choral music is especially beautiful.

Music selections are based on the lectionary and the liturgical season. They are chosen from the Hymnal 1982 and from Wonder, Love, and Praise. As a congregation, we continually strive to broaden our repertoire, both in service music and hymns.

Choir

The Good Shepherd Choir is the backbone of our music program. The choir provides musical leadership at the principal 10:30 a.m. service. Their role is to support congregational singing and to present musical offerings that enhance the lessons for the day and season.

Participation in the choir is open to anyone of high school age and up. No auditions are required. The music director may meet with individuals, however, to assess the best voice part for them.

Rehearsals are from 6:30-7:45 on Wednesdays with a pre-service warm-up at 10:00 on Sundays.

Choral Scholars Program

For over 25 years, Good Shepherd has supported a Choral Scholar program. Four voice students from the Ohio University School of Music are hired to provide leadership as section leaders, cantors, soloists and other duties as the director needs.

June Black Music Fund

This fund was established in 1979 in honor of June Black, wife of the Rt. Rev. William G. Black, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Ohio. Mrs. Black was a member of the parish choir when her husband was rector here at Good Shepherd. The fund supports guest musicians such as special music at Easter and other occasions. Contributions to this fund – particularly in memory or in honor of someone- are welcome at any time.

Special Events

Advent Lessons and Carols, Evensongs, and recitals by student groups and others are some of the special events we offer through the year.
