Meet Our New Priest

As I look forward with great joy and anticipation to becoming your Priest on December 15th, I thought it would be helpful to give you all a little background on me and my family, especially my best friend, Terri, who also happens to be my spouse.

I was born on a U.S. Navy base in Key West, Florida and baptized there at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Within a year, however, my dad was transferred to San Diego, California. I grew up there and following high school attended San Diego State University graduating with a degree in Political Science. I spent a very satisfying year as a social worker before deciding to apply to law school. I graduated from The University of California, Hastings College of the Law, and in the years that followed worked as a trial lawyer for two large San Diego firms. I also taught courses in trial techniques as an Adjunct Faculty member at two accredited law schools.

Although I had essentially stopped going to church while in college, my life took a dramatic turn in January of 1986, when an unexpected but powerful conversion experience led me away from my life as a lawyer and sent me to the Episcopal Seminary in Berkeley, CA. It is worth mentioning that when this radical career change occurred I had been married just three months to Terri who was also working in the field of law as a paralegal for a large San Diego firm. It was a second marriage for both of us, and our blended families then consisted of her son Justin, and my children, Sean and Shana. While in seminary, Terri and I were blessed with a daughter, Gabriela, who was born on August 8, 1988.

Following graduation and my ordination, I served as an Assistant at a large church in Oakland, CA, and as Rector of a small church in Hermitage, PA before being called in 1995 to serve as the Rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Encinitas, CA. While there, I also served for several years as a commissioned officer in the Chaplain corps of the California Army National Guard Reserve, providing pre and post-deployment support to soldiers and their families. During our years at St. Andrew’s, Terri worked as a middle school teacher as well as a private tutor of English and Language Arts. In June of 2012, I “retired” from St. Andrew’s to allow Terri and me to spend several months in England with the two older children and their families who had settled there, including grandchildren Chester (2), and Isabelle (2&1/2). While here, I began searching for a church to serve when we returned to the USA, and the Spirit led us to Good Shepherd. We feel so very blessed to soon be joining your faith community, and to meeting and getting to know all of you.

Until then, may God Bless and keep you all well and may God’s peace, which passes all of our understanding, be with each and every one of you.
